CHILDREN LEARN WHAT THEY LIVE

January 6th 2007 03:00
By Dorothy Law Nolte

If a child lives with criticism,
He learns to condemn.

If a child lives with hostility,
He learns to fight.

If a child lives with fear,
He learns to be apprehensive.

If a child lives with ridicule,
He learns to be shy.

If a child lives with jealousy,
He learns what envy is.

If a child lives with shame,
He learns to feel guilty.

If a child lives with encouragement,
He learns to be confident.

If a child lives with tolerance,
He learns to be patient.

If a child lives with praise,
He learns to be appreciative.

If a child lives with acceptance,
He learns to love.

If a child lives with approval,
He learns to like himself.

If a child lives with recognition,
He learns that it is good to have a goal.

If a child lives with sharing,
He learns about generosity.

If a child lives with honesty and fairness,
He learns what truth and justice are.

If a child lives with security,
He learns that to have faith in himself and those about him.

If a child lives with friendliness,
He learns that the world is a nice place in which to live.

If you live with serenity,
Your child will live with peace of mind.

With what is your child living?

Mrs. M.

I've missed your lovely bright red M,

I had these very words put up on my kitchen cupboard while my children were small.

They are wonderful ideals to live up to, so where did I go wrong?

If you asked them did they love me, all would say yes, yet, with the tyrany of distance and I guess a few other things I feel quite rejected. It seems nothing can change that.

By all means carry the banner just as I did and still do, I just wish I had the power to change a few things. With other things I must rest content.

No matter how well you do it, the end result may surprise you. Sometimes we are the recipient of things we never dreamed of.

Hope this is not too much information. I'd still put those sayings up if I had my time again. Overall mine have done pretty well, it's I who is doing the suffering.

As you, yourself, taught me,

Love and stuff, katyzzz

Hi Ash, Hi Tracy,

It's a good poem isn't it? I find that it's one of those poems that doesn't tell me anything I didn't already know but I could never have worded it so well.

Hi katyzzz,

Sometimes I think you are too hard on yourself. I may not know the details of your situation but the fact that you constantly think about these things can only be a positive.

I wholeheartedly agree with this comment: No matter how well you do it, the end result may surprise you. Sometimes we are the recipient of things we never dreamed of.

That cuts both ways doesn't it? Perhaps you didn't do as bad a job as you think? I wish you would allow yourself more credit and less suffering.

Many thanks for your candid thoughts and comments.

Love & stuff
Mrs M

Mrs. M,

I don't suffer that much, really, it just makes me sad and I feel I need to warn others. It would be easier not to.

Perhaps I'll give it up. It's just a bad time of the year. There are many fare far less well than I do. I know that.

The poem, for want of a better word, brings back memories, as the end result has rather surprised me but I see it everywhere around me. Sorry , I won't do it anymore, it does tend to sound negative to others but it is really not intended that way. Reckon I'd score 9 out of ten.

I'll let the world get on and live its own life, just as I have done. I know of no-one in my age group who is not disappointed the way things have worked out.

Perhaps I'm just too honest, I guess I should sound less like the confesional, and I'm not even Catholic.

I'm sure you're enjoying your family just as I did. I adored mine. The teenage years shocked me.

But I shall not say anything else, I don't want to spoil things for people.

Love and stuff, whih I learned from you. I did know it, just never thought to say it. I think it's a great way to sign off.

HI Mrs M,

I love this poem, I have it on my wall and it always reminds why I rally against so many of the more negative traits listed ... *lol* it's nice to have a reason though, hey?

I use it religiously to remind me daily of the lessons I am teaching my children and am always amazed at how easy it is to remain positive and encourage them, compared to the energy I need to holler and scream and condemn ... no contest, is there?

I can break the negative cycle of generations...

Thanks for the reminder,

Lilla...

Hi katyzzz,

Please don't stop being open and honest. Yes you're children are adults now and I am only just beginning. Yes this is my journey to take but that doesn't mean I don't want to hear about your experiences.

I enjoy reading your comments. As honest and as brutal as you think they are.

Hi Lilla,

Glad to have reminded you about something nice that brings a smile to your face

Hi George,

You right about poems like this popping up at the right time. I don't even know how long I've had but I found it during one of my "clean ups".

Thank you all for visiting.

Love & stuff
