Organised or relaxed?
November 29th 2006 02:04
Since starting this blog I've received a few comments from fellow parents asking, "how do you fit it in with your 3 kids?" It's a fair question. Hadn't given it much thought. Who has the time? I just fit it in I suppose.
So the question begs to be asked - Am I more organised or just more relaxed with every child I have?
I acknowledge that my time management skills have never been sharper. Not even when I was working in the big bad corporate world as an executive was I able to multi- task like the master I am today.
I remember that when I had my first child I couldn't find the time to get out of my pyjamas before 6pm. So I don't think I wouldn't have been able to write a blog with I only had 1 child. Ah, the irony!
As you would expect, with every addition to our family my "to do list" multiplied - and yet I find I can manage to get out of my pyjamas in the morning hours now. Maybe it is more out of necessity now - parents doing school runs in pyjamas can't be a good look.
So which is it?
Am I more organised? Absolutely. I have to be. There's a lot more forward planning, written lists and reminder notices around the place.
Am I more relaxed? Absolutely. I have to be. Because no matter how much forward planning I do, how many written lists and reminder notices are around the place, things invariably go wrong. And sometimes I just have to let things slide. Just so I can write on my blog.
But I have to go now because the baby has woken up, my 3 year old is hungry for chips (he thinks I'll give in because I'm distracted), hang the washing up before it goes mouldy and pick up my daughter from school but not before I go to the supermarket and pick up some nappies hoping my baby won't wet through his last nappy. What was that bit about being relaxed? Or even organised?

Probably,
Don't talk about more children, I'll get jealous if you do, I wanted more.
Search me why, I had enough trouble withthose I did have.
Love and stuff.

I'm certainly kept busy with my 3 - but babies are so cute. I'm holding my 13month old as I type this and he is giggling - best sound in the world.
By the way, did you read my previous post - mistakes parents make? You were the inspiration.

Why does that sound dodgy taken out of context?
I think I hold up the fort for the childless Dad, quite disorganised at home and quite laid back.
My wife wants children but I'm quite enjoying being a newly wed, so I don't think I'll be able to contribute much on this front for at least 3/4 of a year!
It does sound like a bit of fun though, mmm chips!

I'm definitely more organised now that I've had children and I'm positive that I've expanded professional skills. In fact, after being out of the workforce for a number of years, my resume was looking a little thin so I put my job as a mother on there and listed all the skills I have as a result of this position. Just as you would with any past or current job.
Everything from budgeting to conflict resolution to managerial skills. It always goes down quite well when people see it.
I think part of the reason I'm more organised and have time for writing now is because I've learnt to ignore the jobs that aren't necessary, such as ironing.

Well enjoy being a newly wed and childless dad with all the chips you can handle. We didn't intend on having children as early as we did but someone, somewhere slipped up. Ooops!!
Though everytime I have a baby Enzo's career seems to gain momentum. He's not entirely convinced. He babbles something about working hard to further his career.
Hi Andrea,
Good work with the CV. I remember just after I got married and was looking for a new job I was asked if I had ever co-ordinated an event and I used my wedding as my experience. And like you, it was well received.
But it is true isn't it? You learn so many more skills and others are just fast tracked when you become a parent.
Thanks for visiting guys.
