THE CURSE OF THE ROLY POLY SANDWICH

May 1st 2007 01:59
I love Play School. I really do. And not just for the hours of entertainment it provided me when I was young, but for the hours of babysitting it has provided me now that I’m a mum.

I love how they haven’t changed. They still sing the same songs and still make things out of tissue boxes and paper plates. I love Play School.

But I’m saddened to say that Play School has on one occasion let me down. They introduced my daughter to the Roly Poly Sandwich. What is a Roly Poly Sandwich? Well simply, you cut off the crusts of a slice of bread, spread some sort of condiment on the bread (Nutella is a favourite in my household) and roll it up. Genius.

So why am I so bothered by it? Because it has taken over my life.

Kids, what do you want for breakfast? What do you want for morning tea? What do you want for lunch, afternoon tea, dinner, desert, supper? Bloody Nutella Roly Poly Sandwiches. Aaaarrrrrgggghhhhh!

And I’m not the only one who has been tortured by this. My son’s godmother took the kids for the day and sure enough for lunch they had Nutella Roly Poly Sandwiches. My daughter had to show her how to make them.

The next day my son’s godmother says, “Well the Roly Poly Sandwich is interesting.”

“I hate them”, I say with disdain dripping from my mouth.

“Oh God, me too” she says with relief. “I didn’t want to say anything because I know how hard it can be to get kids to eat, and sandwiches are healthy but…why can’t they just have a normal sandwich with the crust on? And maybe with a different filling?” she pleads.

Play School…you have a lot to answer for.

MrsM,

Hehehehe. I love the idea of the roly poly sandwich. Maybe I'll have to make myself one.

But I could see how it'd get real old, real quickly.

Your posts are always a giggle Mrs M... and bring on a massive sigh of relief that I don`t have to worry about Roly Poly Sandwiches for a little while longer....

But why cut the crusts off? I have them all the time my Dad used to make them for me - Always with crusts. They roll better that way.

Never in my life have I ever liked playschool, but thats because I was introduced to it when I was 7, not 3. Oh well, another sweet childhood memory opportunity lost.

I don't aprove of the kids not eating the crust, make 'em eat the crust. I hate wasting stuff like that...

Hi Kylie,

Nice to 'see' you

I love the idea of the roly poly sandwich.

The idea is great...it's the execution that Play School paid not attention to.

Hi Ash,

Well Ash I could laugh or I could cry...better to laugh.

Hi Kleonaptra,

They roll better that way.

I'll give it a shot and tell my kids that Kleonaptra 'said so'.

Hi Dusk,

Oh I love Roly-Poly sandwiches...but with hundreds and thousands...so a fairy roll

Oh I like eating them too. Making them is a bugger.

Hi Jonathon,

roly poly rice

Very funny indeed. At least you can buy those and not have to make them yourself.

Hi Ahmed,

another sweet childhood memory opportunity lost.

Never too late to watch Play School...with your crusts

Thanks everyone for your comments.

Love & stuff

Oh jeez don't tell my nieces about this..

Right now they're in the "ants on a log" rut (banana with peanut butter and raisins on top)....

Hi D,

Ants on a log....that's great.
