TEACHER APPEARS NUDE! SO WHAT?

May 14th 2008 03:14
Last week there was news story where a Year 1 relief school teacher was sacked from her job after appearing nude in a sealed section of Cleo magazine. smh.com.au link

Some parents complained, the school and Department of Education agreed and told Lynne Tziolas that her Year 1 class no longer needed her services.

Ms Tziolas was told that she breached her code of conduct. Maybe she did. I’m not well versed in the code of conduct for teachers, and couldn’t find anything on the Department of Education website, but I assume that it says something along the lines that teachers should not compromise their role model status with the school community.

Fair enough.

However, this nude photo did not show any of Ms Tziolas’ ‘bits’ and it was in a sealed section of a magazine aimed at adult women. She didn’t bring it in for show and tell.

But what has happened is that the story has been blown out of proportion and now the photo has been shown on several news websites.

Mr M has installed a filter on the computer my children use so they don’t stumble onto something nasty, but that filter doesn’t stop The Sydney Morning Herald website from loading and my children seeing the picture.

Storm in a teacup?

There have been plenty of parents who would like to see Ms Tziolas re-instated. Do their opinions count? smh.com.au link

As I mentioned above, this photo was in a sealed section of a women’s magazine.

No child should have access to this photo unless some careless parent leaves it lying around.

I was listening to WS-FM (Sydney radio) and Amanda Keller made a point that it is naïve to think that young girls don’t read Cleo.

The issue here is an 8 year old sees the world differently to a 12 year old. I firmly believe that an 8 year old should not have access to Cleo. Not that I agree that a 12 year old should have access but 12 year olds are a little more cunning than 8 year olds.

But I’m also pretty sure that you could talk to a 12 year old about this. I’m not sure an 8 year old would understand.

And if the 12 year old is reading Cleo, the responsibility doesn’t lie with Ms Tziolas to not do this spread, just in case one of the students from her school will see it.

Would it be okay for the 12 year olds to see the other 9 couples that did the nude spread so long as they didn’t know them?

If all teachers lived by this motto, they wouldn’t dare drink, swear or kiss passionately in public.

What kind of person does a nude spread and speaks candidly about their sex life? Someone who is very comfortable in their skin, is not afraid to celebrate the human form or human love I suspect.

Well said, Mrs M.

Next we will have a law banning teachers from having sex with their partners, just in case someone catches them.

It's a little bit ridiculous, and I reckon it's the way these things are made 'taboo' and blown out of proportion in the media that leads to weirdness in young people - they think they are evil just because they have a body.

Betcha Cleo got their sales target this month.

Hiya Mrs M

I have to agree
If all teachers lived by this motto, they wouldn’t dare drink, swear or kiss passionately in public.

Often I walk past a 'Star Shots' gallery which has some, albeit tastefully done, semi-nude shots of couples in the gallery - what happens if one of them was a teacher?

Like you say the kids shouldn`t have access to that sort of reading material so really it`s down to the parents... which, in a lot of these cases, I think is the big problem.

With all this nonsense about sex is it really any wonder why young people grow up with complexes when it comes to something which is totally natural?

Ash

I hear ya!

Hi Ash,

With all this nonsense about sex is it really any wonder why young people grow up with complexes when it comes to something which is totally natural?

Totally agree with you there. I'm trying at home to show that a body is natural and that we are naturally different. My kids often see me naked because they can't bloody well leave me alone, even when I'm showering

My daughter is 7 and my first son is 5 and they prance around naked and couldn't care less.

They see Mr M and I hug and kiss all the time.

I have to admit I have found myself a bit prudish since I've become a parent. Eg I don't want my kids having sex at 14 even though when I was 14 I didn't think it was a big deal. I digress....

But I can honestly say that if my child's teacher appeared in Cleo,it wouldn't phase me.

These are the sorts of teachers that leave an indelible mark on children. The one's that have a fire in their belly.

Anyways....thanks for the visit and the comment

Pretty people should be able to git nekkid anytime.

Ugly ones should be more selective.

Hi guys.
Ive gotta agree with Ash

and I just said something similar on someone else's blog....Why cant 8 year olds have access to it? Dont they look down in the bath? Its a known fact 7 year olds 'experiment' and we FREAK over it, but why? I think its age old, drilled into us, sex is sin. We have to get over this whole deal. Im not saying I have the answers, but I think we need new questions.

Hi Kleo,

Are you talking about 8 year olds having access to Cleo magazine? Because on that one I have to disagree.

Sure 7-8 year olds do look down there and experiment but just because they are exploring their bodies doesn't mean that they can comprehend what it means to have a sexual relationship with someone.

One step at a time here Kleo.

But I do think that we need to take the shame out of exploring our own bodies.

We shall agree to disagree then my dear Mrs M - its my belief 7 and 8 year olds are reading it in the schoolyard anyway, or nicking it from their 14 year old sisters!

Mrs. M
In Texas, when I was teaching, I had to sign a "morality clause". This clause stated that I was not to "drink alcohol in public, have loose morals, be a single unwed mother, go to bars, or engage in lasivious behavior. I am sure that this did not stop folks maybe it just slowed them down.

I agree with you friend. Great post!

Hi there Mrs M,

I missed this one, but it's a very good point you make and i have to agree that it's up to the parents to NOT BE CARELESS about what they leave lying around.

However, in general, my opinion of nudie shots is that they are ridiculous in the first place and I don't agree with it all. Why do we need it... we managed okay before the American world war thought sex would boost troop morale when the world had gone to hell, or by using it to lure us to the TV, long before Hollywood was contrived?

It seems to me that since then, despite the war ending, Nude bodies stayed on everyone's minds and the line between morals and ethics was irreperably changed for bottom line profit (what a tool)... to the point that people have become so very confused on issues of morals; no wonder the young have a warped sense of right from wrong, good and from bad. reminds me of that saying; 'You can't spoil the child and then chastise him for being spoilt.'

Agreed, there will always be the sick and perverted in any system, but surely nude magazines just add to the corruption of those who would otherwise not cross the line to voyuerism, had their minds been diverted with more practical matters. Sadly, it is those same ones who would leave this muck lying around for the cunning, curious youngster. 'Hey, Mum and Dad are into it, so it must be okay, right?'

Perhaps there is something in those surveys that found that poetry and sober values/conversation are more of an aphrodizzyak to a woman than all the six-packs in the world?

As for the latest trend of Lynx aftershave to violate the olfactory system of every woman by overiding her natural abilities through pheromone induced lust's, is outrageous - phoar, boom-chick-a-wow-wow ... not that I don't like that smell... I just don't like the way i can be manipulated by it to unnatural "highs" ... I like to be able to smell the man too in my own time perhaps ... but that's probably a whole pandora's box of problems right there, hey?

*chuckle* Maybe I was born a century too late?

I know it's slightly off topic here, but sex is everywhere and constantly used to sell every useless item to the poor and unsuspecting fool who thinks he'll pull six chicks if he wears this, or owns that, etc ...

Back on topic : I don't blame the school and I would have sacked her too, she obviously has a brighter future perpetuating boys minds towards lust than a good solid education.

No double standards in this camp.

Lilla ...

Hum. Well, I'm not familiar with Cleo magazine at all. What's the general tone?

As for the nude photos, the very people who are raising hell about them are the ones giving them all of their power. I remember back in the 80s when the newly-elected Miss America (Vanessa Williams) and the newly-famous Madonna were both "outed" in magazines for posing for nude pictures long before they were in the public eye.

Their reactions, as well as the final effects on their respective careers, were polar opposites.

Vanessa made a tearful apology to the public in a press conference, citing the fact that she was broke and had to eat.

Madonna's response was "Yep. What's your point?"

Vanessa's career as a singer took a nosedive and she was dethroned as Miss America. Her guilty reaction empowered her detractors, and the story followed her for years.

Madonna's story fizzled as soon as she burst the balloon of her would-be detractors by refusing to play the guilt game. No matter how weird Madonna's been, I always admire her for that.

Now where was I going with this? Oh yeah--so anyway, the people who make a guilty, dirty thing out of a teacher posing for nude photos are being empowered to do so by the school board. Kids take notice of this stuff. If nothing had been said, I doubt the kids would think much about it one way or the other; now, thanks to the school board, they see this as something "dirty".
