MY DAUGHTER TURNS 6 AND BECOMES A TWEEN

March 7th 2007 03:49
In a couple of weeks time by daughter will be six. Six is the next demographic – it’s a new phase. But I just thought it meant that they weren’t “little” or “babies” anymore. I am sadly mistaken.

My daughter can’t be a tween – not yet. Surely there must be some buffer between being ‘little’ and being a ‘tween’.

I was watching “The Catch Up” last week (the new chat show on Channel 9 @ 1pm) and I was informed that the tween stage now begins at the age of 6; not 8 as I had originally thought.

The rationale is that puberty, which used to begin around the age of 10, now begins as early as 8. What has happened to bring on early puberty? One theory is that girls who live with males that are not related in ‘blended’ families have their puberty hormones triggered early because of all the males pheromones that are flying around in the air. I don’t know how true that is, but it’s a theory and it sounds plausible.

Okay, but this isn’t the case in my household, but puberty isn’t the issue here. I had barely gotten my head around the whole tween stage when I first became aware of it; and to be honest I kept pushing it aside because it just seemed too hard.

But, according to the experts, my daughter is about to become one. So what do I now? Fight it? Blindly accept it? I am getting ahead of myself here. Maybe I should find out more about it?

Is it really a new stage that has become come about in the last few years? Or has it been around for all time but nasty marketing people have used it to make a buck? Did the marketers invent it? Does it need to be looked on pessimistically? Is that a fair assessment of the tween stage?

So much to find out.

Mrs. M.

My first comment seems to have been lost.

I wouldn't give this a second thought. As I heard in the supermarket. "don't worry worry until worry worries you". Enjoy your family, I envy you your extended Greek family upbringing, it sounded great.

katyzzz...[your] love and stuff.

Hi katyzzz,

"don't worry worry until worry worries you"

Haven't heard that one before, I like it. Sound advice.
