STUMPED BY MY 5 YEAR OLD
July 9th 2008 03:39
So there I was last week, helping out in my son's kindergarten classroom.
I was put in charge of organising a game of word bingo for 10 five year olds. Fun, no?
Everyone had a bingo card and some counters to mark off their words.
First word is 'he'.
Second word, 'and'.
And so on an so forth.
Well things started to heat up in this friendly game of bingo; I wonder if the old folk at the club get this excited.
"I've got 4 counters. I'm gonna win" one stated.
"I've got 4 too. I might win", another quipped.
Princess, aptly named, exclaims, "I haven't got any. I'm not going to win" and throws her bingo card in the air.
"Come kiddies", I plead, "we're all winners".
And then in comes my Alex with his matter-of-factly tone, "No we're not."
Excellent. How do you respond to that?

Perhaps an idea more palatable to the 5 year olds would be that yes, there's one winner, but that doesn't make everyone else losers?
Anyhow, it's just his Mum's competitive streak coming out.

Your five year old is spot on. Only one person can win. Otherwise what are we playing for.

LOL, and my husband thinks I'm competitive
To be frank, I was just trying to get out there alive.
I was worried I was going to be a headline

Your Alex is one smart cookie; he's right, you know.
I think kids need a little healthy competition; the "everyone gets a prize" policy so popular for the past 15 years is totally unfair. Any kid will tell you the same..plus, what's the value in an unearned prize?
As for how to respond? "Too soon to tell. This is best out of 6 rounds, so it could be anyone's game."
It would buy you a little time, anyway....

Love it!
And Smooth is right, i should have gone:
"I'm not going to win."
Princess throws her Bingo card in the air.
"You definitely won't win if you don't play."
That's perfect!!

I remember many moons ago - a five-year-old asked me the question - having driven past a paddock full of equine flesh . . .
"What do horses think about all day?"
Yep - you're gotta hand it to them - they come up with some doozies.
Stay well

I do think that kids need competition. I know I thrived because of it.
My Alex is a smart cookie. He's a smart arse really. At 5. I really to think that he is the one that's going to challenge me the most. And I think it's because he's most like me; which makes it great and frustrating at the same time.
A friend of mine (Barb) has trouble with her daughter because she wants her daughter to question everyone and everything....just like Barb does. Barb admits though she has a hard time when her daughter questions her. I think Alex and I are in the same boat.
Either way, it will be fun.
Hi Smooth,
That's good.
I generally have lines stored in my mind for when various situations occur. Eg, someone cuts in line, someone steals your parking spot, etc but I have none when it comes to dealing with a pack of 5 year olds.
Hi MNG,
If they're race horses then they're thinking about WINNING!
Hi Raven,
Out of the 3 of my kids, he is the one that will keep me honest. Definitely calls it as he sees it.
Thanks everyone for the visit and the comments.

But how he sees it doesn't always make sense - classic example:
Alex enters the room where Mr and Mrs M are sitting at the table having a cuppa.
"Mum, can I have a drink"
"Sure", says Mum.
"Why?" comes the reply from Alex.
What on earth do you do with that?!

Nay.

Horses think about food all day. Even when they have food they are thinking about getting more food, or better food. They may be momentarily distracted from thoughts of food while they take apart a fence, but that was only to get to the food.
Unless you are a colt. Then its food and sex, and how to do both at the same time.
As for five year olds......I dont know that many, but I think saying they are all winners is bound to trap you like that!

As a former Kindergarten teacher, I adore 5 year old logic. Oh is only adults could hold onto that! What a funny post! Thanks so much. Thanks for sharing your smart Alex with us!

They do see the world so simply. It's only us adults that manage to complicate things.
