WHEN DID XMAS GO FROM A BIRTH TO PHOTOCOPYING YOUR BUM?
December 8th 2006 02:44
Many, many, many years ago a baby was born in a manger and his name was Jesus. And the celebration of Christmas began.
Many, many, many years later (present day) Christmas has taken a slightly different focus. The celebration certainly has changed.
Andrea from Diet and Health and Little Angry Doll from Falling Haiku Leaf have put up a couple of very amusing posts in recent days about this festive season and the things people get up to at Christmas parties. It most certainly has become the silly season. Which begs the question, why? When? How?
Who decided and when was it decided that photocopying your bum at Christmas was a good idea? Getting drunk and offending people was a good idea? Becoming an outrageous flirt? Why do people think they are funnier at Christmas? Why do people behave this way when celebrating modern day Christmas?
WHY? WHY? WHY?
When did this happen? How did this happen?
Why at no other time of the year, at no other party do these things happen with such consistency and predictability.
Maybe I’m nitpicking…I don’t know. But I find it extraordinary that this behaviour is rife at Christmas. Don’t get me wrong, it is amusing to watch but I am completely dumbfounded as to why it happens.
Please, someone enlighten me!!!

I thought this was Mums word not something that rhymes.
Love and stuff,
live, let live , like and love, all you need is love so I can say no more.
Everything is beautiful.....in it's own way... I'm singing in the rain,
Beg pardon but how can I love the no 1 Orble of to-day, I daren't say it's disgusting, must I say II like it
Hope you recognise all the songs... tis the season to be jolly, fa la la lala ,lalalala
I wish you a merry Chtistmas and a Happy New Year.
I'm sure I'll be back to say that before Christmas, meanwhile enjoy all your music, it's a good post but indeed I shall say no more, it may be interpreted as criticising people, that just simply doesn't do, just let all good things go down the gurgler.
You're doing well. Enjoy it. I come into the bad category everyone is always talking about, I like to answer question, challenge views and make a general nuisance of myself, but I've given all that up to 'like people'
That's the way to go and everyone agrees. Now let's see, number of Orblers in excess of 1000, no of comments, a few, oh well, that's the overall view. I like it, I like it.
katyzzz kkkkkaty, beautiful katyyy , you're the only one that I adore.....

Are you feeling bad about all the Orble hullabaloo?
You're not going to give my question a stab in fear of it being misinterpreted?
Because I have come across Orblers who are down right nasty but all the people that have commented on my blog seem very genuinely nice.
This wasn't meant to be a serious post, just a bit of light hearted fun. So I don't imagine anyone getting offended.

I'm just astounded by some of the views being put forward.
Yes there are some lovely people at Orble and some rather digusting ones, too, for want of a better word.
I thought you'd twig all the frivolity as fitting in with "current recommendations' if you've been following some of the top posts {excluding mine, of course].
I think the reference to Jesus and the baby is most appropriate, the other stuff I do regard as disgusting but the overall recommendation for behaviour at Orble is as per one/two osts, which I'll leave you to follow up on.
Just a little Christmas insanity from me.
I think you raised serious issues, good for you!
Luv and stuff,

I am not so sure whether this is relavant or not, but I do feel it when you stated it, and when I read the Daily Bread today something has reminded me what the modern Christmas has become. Here is how the story goes:
Two women, dressed in their finest, were having lunch together in an exclusive restaurant, A friend saw them and came over to their table to greet them.
"What's the special occation?" she asked.
One of the women said, "We are having a birthday party for the baby in our family. He's 2 years old today."
"But where's the baby?" the friend asked.
The child's nother answered, "Oh, I dropped him off at my mother's house. She's taking care of him until the party's over. It wouldn't have been any fun with him along."
How rediculous - a birthday celebration for a child who wasn't welcome at his own party! Yet when you stop to think about it, that's no more foolish than going through Christmas season, wilth all of its festivities, without remembering the One whose birth we were supposed to be honouring.
Perhaps this does not relate for those who doesn't know Jesus and what His grace has done for us. But how about those who DO know? Is it just another festive season now? That would be my question in my heart for the rest of the month I guess.
Nevertheless, the joy of Christmas and the spreading of love plays an important role, like what katyzzz said.

A stab at answering: maybe it went from photocopying your bum, to a birth. After all, it's probably an appropriation of pagan festivals, right? -- and presumably festive alcohol-assisted events have always involved photocopying your bum, or equivalent.
Wikipedia adds this thought:
"The identification of the birthdate of Jesus did not at first inspire feasting or celebration. In 245, the theologian Origen denounced the idea of celebrating Jesus' birthday 'as if he were a king pharaoh.' He contended that only sinners, not saints, celebrated their birthdays."

That story really does sum it up completely. It's crazy isn't it? Santa doesn't help either. Xmas is supposed to be the time for giving and all Santa does is whip kids up into a frenzy about receiving. Got it backwards again.
Thanks for the visit and the comments. Much appreciated.
Hi Adrian,
Glad you like the title. And thanks for the link. Had a good read about Xmas. I liked this quote:
Charles Dickens' book A Christmas Carol, published in 1843, played a major role in reinventing Christmas as a holiday emphasizing family, goodwill, and compassion over communal celebration and hedonistic excess.
So maybe you are right. Maybe it did go from bum photocopying to a birth.
Thanks for the visit.

I can't answer the 'why' 'cause I have no idea why people think it's necessary to expose parts of their bodies at Christmas that are generally better left covered. Bums included.
Christmas did start as a pagan festival and was adopted by the Christians in the early years of Christianity because they wanted to attract followers.
Christmas is a festival that celebrates the time of the year when the days begin to get longer again (after the shortest day of the year), northern hemisphere, of course. I like that idea.
However, you will pleased to hear that my nether-regions are going to remain firmly enclosed within my baggy, pregnancy pants and not get within two metres of a photocopier of any kind.
Have a good one

I like long days too. They're warmer. Maybe that's it. In anticipation of the days getting longer and warmer people strip.
In the southern hemisphere it's already hot.
Thanks for the visit.

The long days are wonderful, I agree, and it's definitely worth celebrating. I'm still not convinced it'll get me out of my clothes though. Not in public anyway!!!
I'm in the Southern Hemisphere as well, by the way, so we can all celebrate the long days together. Sounds like an excellent idea.
Love your site, I'll be back.

There's no better time than Christmas for a few Christmas party behaviours to gossip and laugh over.
Maybe it's the cumulation of all the stress of the year as the reason some people lose the plot at the Christmas party. As we work harder and longer people's release is greater. Just a theory.
I think I need to go to some different Christmas parties though. Not a bum to be seen at any of the ones I've been too. Except toddler ones of course. Ah well!

I think you're right. One big release for the end of the year and anticipation for the next. I don't see anyone going nuts at Easter or Queen's Birthday.
Thanks for your comments.

The thing is no one cares about Christmas anymore, I'm sorry to say it, but it's a big joke. (I do sound negative which is rare).
I mean if we go way back to when they decided Christmas; it wasn't even when Christ was born! Then, they had these Santas and presents and trees and money and whatever that made people totally blind on what Christmas really is supposed to be.
Oh, and I'm going nuts about Easter too. Bunnies? Eggs? What's that?
Keep it up!

Or in short - too much alcohol! ; )

I wouldn't trade it for all the tinsel in the world though. This is a part of modern-day christmas. It's young, it's happy and at the end of the day we all know its a bit of fun.
Love the post.

The red suited one has alot to answer for. Wonder if he ever photocopied his bum. No that would be a sight.
Hi MelissaA,
Yes the alcohol. But could you honestly imagine Christmas without it?
Hi Anthony,
Well my husband went to "one" of his Christmas parties where someone had a little too much to drink, told the boss what he thought of her, and subsequently found himself out of a job.
I suppose, as long as its not you acting the fool then it is definitely fun.
I haven't been to a work Xmas party in 5 years. With me eldest having started school this year, I've met a lot of new mums. Been to a couple of Xmas parties already. Drunk mums are scary. Lots of playground gossip. So it's not just the young acting the fool.
Thanks for the visits and comments.
